It was quite some time ago.
Having finished listening to the radio programme recorded on the tape I borrowed from a friend,
I thought I'd just leave it alone until the tape finished playing and stopped by itself, because pressing the stop button each time was a faff.
There was silence for a while, but suddenly, accompanied by the sound of waves lapping against the shore, a man's voice, devoid of inflection, said,
I heard someone say, 'Let's play word chain with things floating in the sea.'
Me? I thought,
The moment I thought I heard a little girl's voice whisper “human”,
The stop button sprang up with a loud snap.
I've never been so scared in my life, I thought I was going to tell you something strange, but I'm actually recounting a terrifying experience, aren't I?
Well, this is the most baffling and terrifying thing that's ever happened to me in my life.
Incidentally, the tape stretched out at that point and became completely unplayable. When I told my friends about this, they said, ‘That's just an excuse for ruining a borrowed tape,’ but it really did happen, you know...
